3D Printed Prototype

Drawings

Behind

Looking at the drawings and planning the wood cuts. Sometimes, when squaring up warped boards, the material shrinks more than expected. Best to leave a few centimeters of margin before cutting.

Rounded the cut edges with a trimmer. This time I used charred ash—it smelled amazing while working, had little warping, and its darkened tone was beautiful.

Making domino chips. Cut them to 10×20 mm and rounded the corners.

Marking joints on the glued boards using a jig. This jig was small enough to make with a 3D printer.

Cutting along the marked lines as close as possible with the band saw.

Like this.

I joined four 3D-printed pieces to make the jig, but overlooked one thing: if the jig has uneven height, the trimmer base can’t pass smoothly. Next time, I’ll make sure the jig is all level.

The jig creates a path for the bearing to follow, shaping the wood to match.

Rounded the corners of the shaped wood. It felt good—like getting closer to the finish.

Careful sanding to hide the joint lines.

Previously, I only sanded twice with #120 and #320 grit, but #120 scratches didn’t fully disappear. Adding #220 grit in between made the quality much better. Interestingly, this charred ash felt smooth even without much sanding.

Used a spindle sander for the drilled holes.

Drilled domino slots with the domino joiner, following the jig marks.

Cut the domino tenons to the right length.

Gluing them together.

Left it to cure for about a day. Once the glue turns translucent, it’s hardened.

Until now, I’d mostly used Auro oil because it spreads easily, but this time I tried Osmo oil.

It was much thicker and darker. Needs to be spread quickly before setting.

As expected, oil brings out the wood’s beauty. Best to let it sit for a day or two after application.

Brought it home after finishing! It works just as designed—holds four spools in the AMS and six more in the basket, for a total of ten. Though, in reality, I always seem to have more than that…
