Woodwork

Every morning we begin the day by standing before the Mirror of Ever-Changing, facing our own reflection. More than a simple tool of self-image, it becomes a symbol of our resolve to live each day with meaning. The phrase evokes the ceaseless transformations of life and nature, reminding us—like flames that shift shape from moment to moment—that the way we live today and the sky we see above will never return, existing only in this one fleeting instant. The piece was crafted from charred ash and finished with natural OSMO oil.

Behind

Work image

Initial sketch. I don’t think I’m very good at drawing…

Work image

Scanned it and traced the lines.

Work image

Modeled it using the traced lines.

Work image

Created design drawings based on the model.

Work image

Went to the laser workshop near school for the first time in a while.

Work image

The cut mirrors arrived too! They laser-cut 3T mirror acrylic.

Work image

I’ve fallen in love with charred ash wood—so after the filament drawer, I made this piece with it too.

Work image

I needed two 8T boards, but planing them all by hand would waste too much wood, so I split them on the table saw. The shop teacher helped me out.

Work image

Joined the boards according to the jig size.

Planed them smooth again with the automatic planer!!

Work image

They fit nicely.

Work image

Did a rough cutting—after a few times, I’ve built up some know-how.

Work image

This time I tried a copy bit with the bearing below the blade. But I couldn’t see how much it was cutting… maybe it’s meant for a table router.

Work image

Afterwards… a mountain of sawdust. Weirdly satisfying.

Work image

Because of the bearing size on the copy bit, there were spots it couldn’t reach. I finished those details with a drill bit and a thinner cutter.

Work image

Applied glue thoroughly.

Since the middle section was thin, it split a few times while routing. I patched it, cut again, and repeated that two or three times.

Work image

Attached the frame and the back panel firmly. The frame definitely makes it look better.

Work image

Sanding… For small objects like this, a small sanding sponge works better than a big sander. Much easier on the wrist too.

I only realized that after finishing it, haha.

Work image

With softwoods of low density, you can sometimes drive screws without pre-drilling. But with most hardwoods used in woodworking, if you don’t drill first, the wood will split.

To avoid heartbreak, always drill first.

Work image

Same combo as last time: charred ash + OSMO oil!! It does smell a bit industrial, but the color payoff is totally worth it.

Work image

The best moment… feels like all of woodworking is just for the joy of applying oil.

Work image

When ordering laser cutting, I paid extra to have double-sided tape applied on the back. But the overlapping tape warped the acrylic slightly, creating small bumps. Next time I’ll skip that option.

Convex mirrors are fun though.

Work image

Glued on the mirrors—finished!!

Work image

Brought it home, took photos, and peeled off the film.

Work image

All done ~~ hehe.
