For the 2023 Spring Semester final pavilion critique, the project was set on the rooftop of Seoul City Hall—a site both hidden and captivating. From this vantage point, one can see Sungnyemun, Gwanghwamun, and Namsan Tower, which inspired the name The Lowest Observatory. Yet few people know the rooftop exists. From the ground, City Hall appears solemn and authoritative; in contrast, the pavilion was designed as an open hand extended to citizens, inviting them upward and welcoming them into the space above.

Behind

Work image

From the rooftop of Seoul City Hall looking out over the plaza. The rooftop greenery is well-maintained and the views are beautiful, but people rarely come up, as if they don’t even know it exists. Standing there, you can see Gwanghwamun, Namsan Tower, and Sungnyemun all at once. I decided I’d bring international friends here someday.

Work image

I even did field measurements to model City Hall accurately.

Work image

At one point my printer started acting up, so I replaced the nozzle. That’s when it began its slow decline…

Work image

The mechanism that would allow people to go up and down to the rooftop! I loved the idea at first, but by the midterm critique it had completely lost the concept and atmosphere. Rejected.

Work image

To demonstrate the moving mechanism above, I used Grasshopper. It calculated point positions mathematically in 2D and drew lines to simulate the motion logic.

Work image

Sometimes leftover foam boards from carrot market (Danggeun) pop up for cheap. I went all the way to Sindang for this haul—about 8,000 won.

Work image

The day I bought my first monitor. At 27 inches, it’s just the right size for use in the architecture building.

Work image

My very first band performance—also the last. I was so nervous I couldn’t possibly do it again.

Work image

Oh wow—looking cool~

Work image

Found a new mechanism! Simple, but the middle part moves up and down to connect the first and third plates.

Work image

About 400,000 won worth of materials bought with school funding.

Work image

Two days before mid-crit—the desk surprisingly neat.

Work image

Model complete!!

Work image

Shh, presenting~

Work image

Dinner gathering that night.

Work image

Took a Venti taxi home with Seong-ho. It was pricey, but being able to lie down was ridiculously comfortable. Worth the investment.

Work image

Taking model photos is important.

Work image

My model was used for Hanyang University’s 2023 architecture accreditation. Super proud.

Work image

On clean-up day, I told a friend to lie down on the pile of stuff so I could take a photo. The fact that he obeyed so quietly was funny.

Work image

I left this behind. I’d written “Steal this and kiss me” on it.
